Two local classes!

As the wrapping paper and ribbon have been cleared from the floor and presents have been put in their place, it is time to look forward to the New Year.  With the New Year many of us go down the road of making resolutions.  This year, let's make your skin a priority and your first resolution!  We all know that eating good and drinking lots of water is great for your skin but good skin care is also necessary.  Our class on Young Living Skin Care is a perfect time for you to come and learn about the many products that Young Living offers.  You will get hands-on practice with a number of products.  AND there will also be a demo of the toxin-free Savvy Minerals Mineral makeup.  Afterwards you'll get to test which colors are best for you.   So, come and learn some of the information Ann learned at the Young Living Beauty School!  The class is on Saturday, Jan 6th at 7pm at Ann's home. This class has a $20 fee.   So, tell us you are coming!!  RSVP to Ann or Leah by Jan 3rd via email, text, or FB message....or the old fashioned way of calling!  Class address will be sent to those who RSVP.

The other class is for non-members to learn about oils.  If you have friends who are interested in learning more about oils this is a perfect class to invite them to attend.  Attend the class with them to help them feel more comfortable.  Here is what we will cover:

You'll get to learn all about essential oils.
·         What they are
·         Why purity matters
·         How to use them safely
·         Ways to use them
·         Why to use them
·         And the best way you can get started with essential oils

The non-member will get to make something using essential oils to take home for fun!

There is NO fee for this class.  So, come relax with us.  Refresh yourself with some oil infused goodies and get ready to learn!

This class is on Friday, January 5th at 7pm.....also at Ann's home. RSVP by Jan 3rd.

If you and your friends would like to attend both the Oils 101 AND the skin care class, we are offering them together.  We would have you arrive at 6pm instead of 7pm on Saturday, Jan 6th.   RSVP by the 3rd.

THAT smells nice! OR does it?

In the past we have talked about Young Living Diffusers and Wax warmers.  Today we are going to expand and talk a little more about fragrances in general.

How many of you use plug-ins?  Do you use laundry products with fragrance?  How about your lotions, deodorants, cleaning products or bath products?  Did you say yes to ANY of these questions?  If you did, then you should take two minutes to read this article from Natural Health 365.  It talks about those fragrances and what they are really doing to you.  READ IT HERE.

Now. that you have read the article you may be wondering what you CAN do to make your home and person fresh smelling.  It is possible!  How?  Did you really need to ask?  Young Living Essential Oils of course!  Not only can you use them in a diffuser to make your home smell amazing but you can use them in your cleaning products, lotions, bath products and so much more.  Young Living even makes cleaning products without the harmful fragrances and chemicals you should avoid.

So.....what are you waiting for?  Ditch the fragrances and come over to wellness with me!  Comment here that you are ready to start or give Leah or Ann a pm on Facebook!

No bubbles!

Ann thought the dish soap she used was pretty good.....it did say environmentally friendly.  But when she scanned it into the Think Dirty app, the fragrance in the soap make it a toxic 9 on the scale of 10.  Yikes!    So, she made the change to Young Living's Thieves Dish Soap.

It does take a little to get used to as it doesn’t bubble. Really, none of Young Living's liquid cleaners bubble: the laundry soap, shampoos, and Thieves household cleaners included.
.
There are a several good reasons for this:
1) Essential oils change the surface tension of bubbles, making them more likely to pop, and
2) Most bubbles you find in liquid soaps are a byproduct of SLS or Sodium Lareth (or Lauryl) Sulfate.
.
SLS is a very common surfactant found in about 30% of cleaning products, and much of this is synthetic. SLS is a known ocular irritant, dermal irritant, can be absorbed across the skin, and may also be associated with hair loss and aquatic toxicity. Therefore Young Living chose to exclude it from their products.  (side note:.....it is also found in many toothpastes)
.

So, take a tip: Skip the bubbles!! They mean nothing for the cleansing power of the product.  Thieves Dish Soap is the natural alternative!

Dr Doug Corrigan Part 2

If you missed part one of Dr. Doug Corrigan's article on why the Distillation Process Matters, you can go HERE to read it!  Read it first before this article so this article makes more sense to you.

The next part about why distillation matters has to do with making your own synergies.  What is a synergy?  A synergy is where you have blended more than one essential oil together to create a new and different product.  The new product can oft times do more for you than a single product.  What?  Yes, it is true!

This information follows up on Doug's part one article noted above and the article on Synergies makes it totally understandable why the distillation process is even more important.  As requested by Dr. Doug, I am sharing a link where you can find his article about Synergies.  He and his wife, Amy, have an absolutely wonderful Facebook page called Shedding Light on Essential Oils.  I highly recommend that you join the group.  You don't have to be a Young Living member to access his information either!

So....here is the link to the article.  Come back here and tell me what you thought about the article!

Experience really does mean a better product!

I'd like to introduce Dr. Doug Corrigan to you!  Doug may look young but he has a tremendous amount of experience and is uber smart!  Doug holds a Master's Degree in Physics and a Ph.D in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.  He has an awesome Facebook page with his wife, Amy.  You can see the page HERE.

The article below is Part 1 about the distillation process of essential oils and explains why a company like Young Living produces a quality product because of their experience!  Now many oil companies can claim this!! Enjoy your reading and getting your 'geek on'.    Stay tuned for Part 2 soon!

THE DISTILLATION PROCESS MATTERS - PART 1 (PLEASE SHARE)

Does your essential oil company pay attention to the distillation process used to produce your essential oils? Are you wondering if this even matters?

If you're curious, keep reading. There are a number of different processes that can be used to extract the essential oils from the plant. One of the most common processes is steam distillati
on. In the process of steam distillation, steam is passed over the plant biomass, causing the volatile essential oil constituents to enter into the vapor phase. This hot vapor mixture of water and essential oil molecules is then cooled down until it converts back into a liquid, and then collected in a container. The two phases of water and essential oils separate, making it easy to separate the water and oil from one another.

Recall that essential oils are complex mixtures of many different molecules, each having a different boiling point. Because of this difference, some molecules will distill more quickly than others. Some molecules will come off first, some will come off in the middle of the process, and some will come off last.

The three major variables that manufactures have control over are 1) pressure, 2) temperature, and 3) time. Each variable is critical to determining the final composition, and quality of the final product.

To give you an example, in the graph below I show you how distillation time affects the composition of the oil. I show you the level of 1,8 Cineole, Camphor, Borneol, Terpineol, Caryophyllene, and Cadinene in the distillate broken down into buckets of time. This is for the steam distillation of Rosemary oil.

You can see from the graph that in the first five minutes, almost all of the 1,8 Cineole is released from the plant material. Very little comes off after that initial 5 minute period. Caryophyllene is released mostly in the middle of the time window.

Now look at Cadinene. Very little comes off in the first 5 minutes. Most of the Cadinene is released between 20 and 30 minutes. Many of the trace/minor components take a longer time to distill off. These tend to be the higher molecular weight compounds like sesquiterpenes and triterpenes. These components are very important to the overall therapeutic quality of the oil. To learn more about this, check out my educational modules on synergy.

So, if you distill for too short a period of time, some components will be missing. You might ask, why not just distill for a long period of time to make sure everything comes off? Well, the process of distillation is a harsh process. The plant material is being exposed to high temperature, pressure, and water. These conditions can cause the essential oil molecules to hydrolyze and oxidize (chemical transformation processes). Therefore, if you distill for too long of a period of time, you will basically end up with a container filled with molecules that are ineffective, or in some cases, hazardous. You will have a great yield, but the therapeutic value of the oil will be diminished, or even transformed into something that may irritate your skin or cause other problems.

So, if you don't distill long enough, you will miss essential components. If you distill for too long of a period, you will destroy the molecules. Therefore, there is a "sweet spot" of time that optimizes the entire compositional profile while not harming the molecules. It's important to realize that this optimum time window changes from oil to oil; therefore, it's necessary to experimentally determine this window for each oil. Young Living has spent years perfecting this process for each oil. I feel very confident in making the statement that there is no other company in the world that understands and pays attention to the distillation process more than Young Living.

A large majority of the producers of essential oils do not optimize their distillation process for therapeutic value. Instead, they optimize the process for yield. Why? They can offer the oils at lower cost and/or increase their profits by optimizing for yield. This means increasing the temperature, pressure, and time to extract as much of the essential oils from the biomass. Unfortunately, these conditions chemically alter the molecules in the essential oil.

A majority of the essential oil companies that are springing up do not even own their own distillation equipment. They simply buy the oil from brokers, bottle it, and put their branded label on the bottle.

Are you wondering why cheap essential oils don't work, or why they cause rampant skin irritation problems? Well, the distillation process is one of the major culprits.

Make sure your company is a master of the distillation process. If they aren't, tell them goodbye.

It's slow........Vetiver!

The following is from the Young Living blog.  They have some excellent information on oils that you should definitely look into.  The blog address is:  https://www.youngliving.com/blog/
I personally like to use Vetiver on my big toe at night just before I go to bed to support a solid sleep pattern. There was also a very wonderful video I saw recently about essential oils and how you can use them for horses!  Yes, horses!  It showed the veterinarian just hold the bottle of Vetiver up for the horse to smell.  The horse repeatedly smelled the oil alternating his nostrils and sometimes raising his head in the air and pulling the scent deep into his brain.  When he was done 'treating' himself, he turned away from the vet and went back to eating.  Why would Vetiver be good for a horse?  Well, this particular horse was overactive and the Vetiver was being used to help him focus and be calm.  Read below and you'll see a familiar thread!!
VETIVER
When it’s time to unwind after a long day, or if you need to buckle down for a project in a relaxing environment, look no further than Vetiver essential oil. Vetiver oil provides a sweet, woody aroma that can be applied topically or diffused to help create warm, welcoming spaces. The uses of Vetiver oil are numerous, from providing the perfect grounding scent for a decompressing massage to creating the ideal fragrance for soaps and perfumes. Find out more about the vetiver plant, as well as some key Vetiver oil benefits, and if you decide you need togive yourself a mid-blog Vetiver oil hand massage, we’ll understand.

1. From the earth

The vetiver plant is a perennial grass native to tropical regions in Asia. Vetiver is a fragrant grass with long stems and flowers, but Vetiver essential oil is derived from the root of the plant. Vetiver roots can grow 7–10 feet long, and their deep, tangled webs help make the plant tolerant against drought and protect against soil erosion.

Vetiver Young Living2. Into the bottle

Vetiver oil is steam distilled from the root of the vetiver plant. It produces a warm, woodsy scent that’s slightly sweet and earthy.

3. For men

The woody, earthy scent has been used for its fragrance for centuries, and a popular use of Vetiver is adding a warm aroma to men’s soaps and colognes. You can create a personalized scent by adding Vetiver essential oil as a base note for a masculine DIY perfume.

4. Study scent

Let Vetiver’s complex and uplifting aroma help calm your mind so you can focus on the tasks that require the utmost attention. Perfect for study, difficult work tasks, or even curling up with a long novel, Vetiver essential oil’s fragrance creates a relaxing atmosphere where distractions lose their sway.

5. Thicker than Thieves®

Vetiver oil is known for its viscosity. Incredibly thick, it can sometimes be slow to flow from the bottle, but patience is a virtue, and there’s nothing wrong with your oil! Because Vetiver essential oil is so thick, we recommend adding it to a carrier oil before you put it in your diffuser.

V-6 Carrier Oil Vegetable Complex

6. In the tub

Relax from head to toe with a warm bath, aided by the calming aroma of 15–20 drops of Vetiver oil added to your evening soak. If you want to dim the lights and hit play on your favorite chill-out tunes, that’s between you and the Vetiver.

7. On your body

Combine a few drops of Vetiver essential oil with V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex for use in massage. All those unused “free foot rub” coupons that your significant other gave you last Valentine’s Day? You won’t regret putting them to use in an experience that can be deeply calming and moisturizing.

8. At home

Create a blend for your family that is warm and relaxing. Use 3 drops of Vetiver essential oil, 5 drops of Lavender, and 2 drops of Ylang Ylang in your diffuser to set the stage for nights in playing board games, reading, or just getting through homework and chores in a calmer atmosphere.

You know that Feeling?

You know how you feel when you have that favorite outfit that makes you look like a million bucks? It just makes you feel good, doesn't it?!  And when you feel good, you just feel more confident.  That is also true when we feel good about your make up. We want to look beautiful to others and to our self. Companies know that you want to look beautiful and they have happily catered to our desire for centuries.

Sadly, not all beauty products are good for your skin.  Did you know that 99% of the makeup available to you has harmful chemicals in it?  True!!  Many contain gluten, mineral oil, petrochemicals, talc, parabens, nano-particles, phthalates, bismuth, metals, synthetic dyes or fragrances.  Yuck!!  Even one of the popular mineral makeup lines has chemicals! Your skin is the largest organ on your body so keeping chemicals away helps to keep you above the wellness line! So, how do you look pretty without those chemicals?
Well, we have a solution for you.  One that is easy to apply and it has NONE of the chemicals I listed above!  You do not have to compromise quality for beauty. Savvy Minerals by Young Living™ was formulated to include only the most pristine ingredients.  Every Savvy Minerals product was carefully crafted so you can feel fabulous about yourself and what you’re putting on your skin. Every piece of the Savvy Minerals line was developed with an unwavering standard of purity and quality.  This gives you a full variety of naturally derived products made without cheap fillers or synthetics—and that’s a beautiful thing!

We recently received the brush set for this mineral makeup line and it is so incredibly soft....almost softer than mink!
Wherever life takes you, Savvy Minerals is here to empower you to be the woman you want to be.
You can read all about the Saavy product line....click HERE.

Oh, Baby!!

When you start using essential oils in your home several things happen.

  • You realize that there is something beyond what is available at the grocery store.
  • You find that you can replace many of your houesehold products with chemical free options.
  • Then you wonder.......how do I use my essential oils for my baby?
The answer used to be........make your own products and make sure you dilute, dilute, dilute. Many people were afraid that their homemade products for baby weren't as safe as they wanted them to be. To answer this problem, Young Living introduced a BRAND NEW line of chemical-free products for babies.  Yeah!!  They are all chemical free, safe for baby, and a wonderful alternative to the major brands with their chemical ridden formulas.

Enter in the new Seedlings product line.  Isn't that an adorable name?!!  The line includes:
  • Baby Wipes
  • Baby Wash & Shampoo
  • Baby Oil
  • Baby Lotion
  • Diaper Rash Cream
  • Linen Spray (coming soon)
When you are ready to use chemical free products for your precious baby, let us know!

Popular wipes Vs. Thieves Cleaner

The kids are going back to school and not only are the schools asking for you to donate cleaning items like this (some ask, some don't), but you may be stocking up for yourself as well.  We all want the surfaces our kids come in contact with to be free from germs and these wipes seem to make this job easy.  We feel like we have done a good job and protecting our kids from getting sick.....except for one thing.....we probably aren't!!

There has been a LOT of marketing for disinfecting products but the data supporting their effectiveness isn't there.  Even the FDA (Food & Drop Administration) admits that "there is no evidence that cleaning with disinfectants is any better at preventing illness than cleaning with regular soap and water"

The other problem is that many of the popular products contain some pretty harsh chemicals that can cause side effects like skin and eye irritation as well as asthma like symptoms.  Have you ever read the back of the packaging of the wipes?  You should!!  In the fine print you will frequently find the recommendation to "wash your hands immediately after use!"  Well, that takes some of the convenience away from the wipe doesn't it.  Then there are other instructions that say if you want to really disinfect, you should use enough product to make the surface stay wet for FOUR minutes!  What?  Really?  Later on in the instructions it tells you that you should wash the surface with potable water after you have used the wipe if you are going to be putting food on that surface.  Suddenly, they aren't as convenient as you thought.

Then there are the chemicals commonly found in wipes.......some are called quatemary ammonium compounds ("quats") which are problematic.  They cause skin irritants, they can irritate your lungs, and have been linked to asthma and reproductive harm. There are also many preservatives that help to prevent bacteria from growing in the package.  These could include parabens, formaldehyde releasers and others that have been linked with adverse health effect.  The overuse of these ingredients and the promotion of tons of antibacterial products have started to create "superbugs".  THAT is super bad news for all of us.

So........what are you going to do about it?  You want to have clean surfaces for your family and you want it to be convenient too.  WE HAVE THE ANSWER!

Thieves Household Cleaner........made with a proprietary blend of essential oils (Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Clove, Cinnamon, and Lemon) and no chemicals.  You don't have to rinse this off your counters in order to eat either.   Thieves ability to protect you is awesome.  The cleaner is a concentrate.  Only 2 caps makes 16 oz. of spray that you can use on most of the surfaces in your home.  Kitchen counters, Bathroom (everywhere) and more.  We even did our own experiment a while back to test the Thieves blend.  See that yellow spot on the bread in the picture below?  That is Thieves. The black and grey......lots and lots of mold.  This piece of bread was in my dark cabinet for over a month!

So, when it comes to protecting your kids and family, consider Thieves first.  Ask your school who is allowed to use the popular wipes.  Are they being used according to those instructions on the back?  Their way of using the wipes may not even follow the directions.  Then you can go an extra step!  Offer them a spray bottle of Thieves instead!

EVERYONE CAN COME!

THIS Saturday there will be a rally at Ann's home.  Anyone can attend.  And it's FREE!  It is called the Live Your Passion Rally and it is open to anyone who would like to attend.  We will be showing a number of short (2 - 4 min) videos from Young Living corporate.  You'll hear about a new oil they have coming out, a report on the mission they support, see D Gary Young's recent quest in Alaska, hear about new products coming out just in time for Mother's Day and learn about products that will be on sale (yes, please)!  And that is just the tip of the iceberg!  We'll be giving away door prizes (oily things!) and have some oil infused treats too.  It will be an exciting day and we don't want you to miss it!

Use your Tax Refund for Healthy Change

Many of you have a tax refund coming.....here are a couple of ways you can use your refund to give a boost to your body for health.

Grow a Garden – GMO ingredients taking over your food?  Take charge of your own food and start a garden!  Raised beds, compost bins, heirloom seeds and some fruit trees can start you out right. Your body will thank you for this!  If you don’t have room on your own land, many communities offer a plot in community gardens.  If neither of these are an option, consider investing more in the local farmers market and purchase organic foods there.

Healthy cooking!  I get it, eating healthy is a lot of work.  If you find cooking to be a struggle, especially healthy cooking, maybe it is time to take a class to learn how to cook from scratch.  (No more box food!)  Learn how to preserve the food you’ll be raising in your garden.  Many community colleges and senior centers offer cooking classes no matter what your age.

Inside air quality changes - Did you know that the air inside your home can be laden with chemicals?  Your paints, carpets, flooring and cleaners all give off fumes making the air in your home unhealthy.  Spring is coming and it is an excellent time to air the house out.  While your home is shut up, get a good air purifier or ionizer to start yourself in the right direction.

Start Using Essential Oils – You didn’t think we’d forget this one on the list!  We are HUGE fans of essential oils.  When we started using Young Living essential oils several years ago we had no idea of how much they could support a healthy body, a clean home and even great cooking!!   There are several ways you can get the oils.  You can be a retail customer and just purchase at full retail price OR we suggest that you save $160 of your tax money (plus tax & shipping) and sign up as a wholesale member to get 11 oils and a diffuser (Retail over $300) plus 24% off the retail price on all future purchases.  Believe us.....this small investment can have a huge impact on your life in multiple ways!!

Join a Gym or Hire a Personal Trainer – CrossFit training centers are really becoming popular. With a little money in your pocket right now, you may want to pay for some classes and maybe even a session with a personal trainer!  Investing in your health this way is really a win win situation.

Buy A Bike – Riding a bike is great exercise. Get a good bike and promise to pedal more instead of using your car.

Investing in Healthy Sleep – Did you know that many mattresses and pillows contain Endocrine Distruptors?  The definition of Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that, at certain doses, can interfere with endocrine (or hormone) systems. These disruptions can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by hormone disruptors.   What does this mean to you?  Now may be a good time to invest in a new pillor or a new ‘green’ mattress....one made of wool, cotton, or latex without flame retardant. You may notice better sleep as well!!
