The Aroma of Love ๐Ÿ’•

Dr. Lindsey Elmore is a Pharmacist with a passion on everything oils and more.  I saw this post from her on Facebook and thought that it was something I hadn't really thought of before.  I know that your brain has a fantastic memory for smells but this info took that to a brand new level.  If you want some excellent information, make sure you follow her.  Click HERE for her page.
.
Did you know that being in love changes your sense of smell? And that the sense of smell is partially responsible for helping you fall in love. ❤️
.
In a series of studies, women were asked to smell t-shirts from their partner, a friend, and strangers. Women who were more deeply in love are very accurately able to identify their partner’s attire. However, people who are less in love are also able to identify the shirt of their friend from the shirts ofstrangers. People who are deeply in love are less able to tell their friend’s shirt apart from the shirt worn by a stranger. ๐Ÿ’œ

This is a theory known as deflection, and it argues that being in love with someone reduces the amount of attention that we give to other suitors. We know it happens with sight. Brain imaging suggests that lovers focus more attention on each other, and we spend relatively less attention to friends of the opposite sex. This study suggests that deflection also happens with the sense of smell. ๐Ÿ’›
.
It is not surprising. Mammals recognize potential mates through the sense of smell. The chemical signals that we give off (human essential oils aka pheromones) communicate with potential mates and leads to many different physical and emotional effects. First, the hypothalamus is engaged. Without any conscious thought the hypothalamus changes the our hormones. Not surprisingly, large increases in hormones can be seen in men when they smell estrogen coming through a woman’s skin, and vice versa.๐Ÿ’š
.
Some people say that pheromones make us more attractive, but this is not exactly true. Pheromones simply give off the aroma of sexual availability. So, don’t waste your money on perfumes that claim to contain pheromones. They don’t make you prettier, just give off the allure that you are looking for a mate. ๐Ÿ’™
.
Get this fascinating snippet: our bodily aroma is actually governed by MHC genes in our immune system. The way the MHC genes combine in our bodies dictates how resistant we are to disease and our brain is naturally programmed to select a mate with a different MHC configuration than our own. This means that we are better able to produce offspring with a more robust immune system. In a study, a professor places t-shirts in cardboard boxes and asked participants to rate the shirts based on intensity, pleasantness and sexiness. The results showed that people consistently liked shirts from people with different MHC genes. ๐Ÿงก
.
As the Germans say Ich kann ihn nicht riechen! If you hate the smell of someone. . .you never end up on date #2. ๐Ÿคข

What else have you learned about the science of love? ๐Ÿ’—
